The Role and Importance of PLA Additives

The PLA formulas include unique additive mixes, frequently involving ten or more substances. Therefore, a problematic chromatographic task is identifying and quantifying these additive packages.

Common PLA Additive

A wide variety of chemical species are employed as polymer additives. We utilize this extensive range of additives to give our PLA products more features. Their volatilities concerning molecular weight vary greatly.


Stabilizers are added to polymer formulations to prevent heat and light-assisted oxidation, extending their useful life. Free radical sites that can react with oxygen to produce unstable peroxy radicals and ultimately lead to polymer chain scission are formed in the polymer chain, which causes this process.


When thermoplastic molding, lubricants are added to manage the melt rheology, making the polymer easier to process. External lubricants are added to a polymer blend to regulate the adhesion and friction between the polymer melt and hot processing equipment.


Plasticizers are organic compounds with high boiling points frequently found in high concentrations and dissolve polymer chains to create stable gels. Intermolecular forces are consequently diminished, which lowers the polymer glass transition temperature. Phthalates, adipates, and polychlorinated hydrocarbons are examples of common plasticizers.

Advantages of Using Additives

The bulk of the time, additives are used to improve the processing characteristics and processability of the PLA material. Polymer additives are used to reduce the cost of generating additives. Fillers, also known as extenders, give a polymer more bulk, decreasing the quantity of base polymer needed and bringing down prices.
